Thoughtful Thursday: The Cure for Winter Woes and Frozen Toes

“The weather is nature’s disruptor of human plans and busybodies. Of all the things on earth, nature’s disruption is what we know we can depend on, as it is essentially uncontrolled by men.” ― Criss Jami, Killosophy

Ready for spring? The first snowfall was magical, just a dusting to welcome winter and decorate our storybook community. The second snow of 5+ inches slowed us down as we momentarily acknowledged we are at Mother Nature’s whimsy…that, and we are geographically positioned at the paranormal line of weather demarcation, the I-95 corridor. And as if we didn’t pay heed to nature’s taunts and warnings, today’s snow, sleet and frizzle is paralyzing. Not since last March, in the throes of a pandemic panic and Governor Hogan’s orders to shut and shutter have so many businesses been forced to close. Road are treacherous and sidewalks slick as just 1/10 of an inch of ice will disable the most able-bodied among us!

And it isn’t just weather we must contend with, Covid has dramatically altered how we deal with winter. Some traditional snowbirds didn’t fly south to warmer climes choosing to shelter-in-place in an area with far lower rates of the virus. Some “weekenders” upgraded their get-away home to full time status. Real estate is at a premium with homes receiving over-list-price offers as soon as they are listed. The Eastern Shore’s small-town ambience possesses a sense of security that beckons folks from the cities and burbs. And Kent County is surely the most attractive area with virus data at the lowest in the state and region. Winter’s weather blanket only endorses the political and medical messages to stay home and be safe!

So let’s fly south to Cross Street in Chestertown to warmer temperatures and sunny skies where the sounds of lapping waves and gulls calling entice us to dig our toes in warm sand. The smell of brackish water and the feel of salt on sunburned skin stirs a longing for summer. Artists provide you the ticket to journey wherever your imagination desires to visit. Their paintings embolden that wanderlust that lies within each of us to escape what is and celebrate what can be!
